Chiefs Nip Hobeaus, 6-5
|
The Caldwell Chiefs overcame a pretty good performance by Smoky Mountain catcher Bob McGinnity, beating the Hobeaus, 6-5, at Pipers Ballpark. McGinnity went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Caldwell reliever Enrique Oliva got the win, raising his record to 1-2. Albert Longoria was tagged with the loss. Smoky Mountain is now 9-9.
Batting in the bottom of the 11th, 22-year old third baseman Melvin Farr had a real shot to win the game. Smoky Mountain pitcher Albert Longoria was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Farr hit a run-scoring single. The Chiefs had a walk-off triumph.
"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Farr told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."
