In a low-scoring tilt between the Smoky Mountain Hobeaus and the Columbia River Rats, 19-year old right-handed pitcher Steve Calhoun was the difference-maker. The Smoky Mountain right-hander spearheaded the 2-0 win. The victory makes Smoky Mountain 6-17.

The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Kelvin Reynolds came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Columbia pitcher Max von Wildungen, he hit a 2-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Smoky Mountain on top, 1-0.
