Loss Spoils Fine Performance by Kleijwegt

Carol Kleijwegt did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Columbia River Rats from being beaten, 7-5, to the Yucca Valley Yellows at Columbia Stadium. Kleijwegt belted 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Chris von Kotze, the winner, is now 5-5. He struck out 6 and walked 2 over 7 innings, while allowing 4 runs on 6 hits. Pancho Lizalda earned the save for Yucca Valley, his 7th.
Leo Murdoch had a big 2-run home run for the Yellows in the top of the fifth inning. With Yucca Valley leading 5-4 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a cutter from 23-year old left-handed pitcher Melvin Riggle and punished it. The result was his 8th home run of the season, which put the Yellows on top, 7-4.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Murdoch. "And not try to do too much."
The 8th-place Yellows lifted their record to 22-31.
