River Rats Score Late to Nip Hobeaus, 4-3
|
The Columbia River Rats took Smoky Mountain pitcher Cisco Díaz's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Smokies Stadium. The final score had Columbia getting past the Hobeaus, 4-3. Díaz went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 4. Sam Sullivan, 1-1, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. Picking up the save was 22-year old right-handed pitcher Jack Simmons.
Had Carol Kleijwegt not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Kleijwegt hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the River Rats.
"It was a solid team effort," said Kleijwegt after the game.
Columbia, at 36-28, holds down second place in the Silver A.
