Smith Powers Chiefs Offense
|
Riding the 3-hit performance of the 23-year old left fielder Steve Smith, the Caldwell Chiefs stopped the Washington Generals, 3-1. Now 16-76, Washington has dropped 13 straight.
Keith Hernández had a big solo home run for the Chiefs in the bottom of the third inning. With Caldwell leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he got a fastball from 21-year old right-handed pitcher Billy Gutiérrez and swatted a home run to right. It was his 13th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Chiefs ahead, 2-0.
Caldwell manager Jorge Agramunt commended his team for "banging out a nice win."
