Late Rally by Liberty U-24 Secures 3-1 Win
|
The Philadelphia Liberty U-24 rode a solid performance from 21-year-old starting pitcher Pete Gross to a win, beating the Pontiac Godfathers, 3-1, at Pontiac Copperdome. The winner was Gross. He threw 8.0 innings allowing 1 run. The loser was Clemens Schlöndorff. Víctor Rodríguez notched his 7th save in 8 chances.
Philadelphia used a timely hit from 22-year old catcher Mike James to get the win. The pinch hitter delivered a 2-run triple in the top of the ninth inning to put the Liberty U-24 on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was huge.
"Pete went out and did what we needed," said Philadelphia manager Dan Fletcher.
The Godfathers, now 38-58, have lost 4 in a row.
