Extra-Inning Win by Machine Over Flyers
|
The Montreal Machine withstood an impressive performance by Pennsauken left fielder Phil Thomas to defeat the Flyers, 5-4, at Pennsauken Park. Thomas hit 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Gary Smith, now 1-0, was credited with the win in 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0. Ken Irvin earned the save for Montreal, his 1st of the year.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for John Barlow? The 26-year old second baseman Barlow stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put Montreal up, 5-4. For the game, he was 3 for 5, including 1 double and 2 singles.
"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Machine manager Alfonso Vera.
Pennsauken falls to 1-1.
