Fans of the Squirrel Hill Pierogis who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Squirrel Hill win over the visiting Billings Polar Bears, 2-1, in 10 innings. Jeff McElroy started for the home team against Santiago García. Santiago García earned accolades for his performance. Squirrel Hill pitcher Richard Roche earned the win, hiking his record to 1-0. Carlos Rodríguez suffered the loss.

The Pierogis got a clutch hit from third baseman Dae-sung Pak. In the bottom of the tenth, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Pierogis.

"It's great to see the crowd jacked up," Pak said.
