Mockingbirds Score Late to Upend Voodoo, 3-1
|
The Memphis Mockingbirds rode a solid performance from 24-year-old starting pitcher Marvin Velásquez to a win, beating the New Orleans Voodoo, 3-1, at The Voodoo Lounge. Memphis pitcher Lawrence Wood earned the win, hiking his record to 1-0. Alex Thompson suffered the loss. With the win, Memphis lifts its record to 4-1.
Memphis used a clutch hit from Ai-de Lau to snatch the win. The pinch hitter belted a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mockingbirds ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit, but it was huge.
"Marvin is tough to beat when he's hitting his spots," said Memphis manager Beau Carsten.
