Rainbow Mermaids Prevail, 6-5, Over Toledo
|
The Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids used the hitting of center fielder James Murphy to subdue the Toledo Stingers, 6-5. For the game, Murphy went 2-2 with a triple, a double, and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs. Pablo Valentín picked up the win, improving his season record to 3-5. He struck out 3 in 5.2 innings. Juan Carlos Mejía closed out the game, earning his 8th save.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rainbow Mermaids grabbed the lead when António Merano rapped a two-out single. Northern Virginia was trailing 5-4, when Merano hit a 2-run single off Fernando Ríos to put his team in front, 6-5.
"Enjoyed this one," Murphy told the Northern Virginia Observer. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
By defeating Toledo, the 7th-place Rainbow Mermaids improved to 24-25.
