The Marquette Miners stymied the Virginia Beach Whales, 6-2, at Marquette Stadium. Steven Williams had a good day at the plate. He went 2-4 with a home run, while adding 5 RBI and scoring once for Marquette. Francisco Rodríguez got the win, improving to 1-0. He held the Whales to 1 run on 3 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 5 and walking 1. Virginia Beach now has a record of 2-1.
Marquette took a 6-1 lead on Williams's 3rd home run of the season. The grand slam home run, which he hit off Rusty Russell in the bottom of the seventh, propelled Marquette to the win.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Williams told a Marquette Gazette reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
