Hurricanes Pick Up 5-1 Win
|
Bob Smithley was outstanding against Oakland. The left-hander, who is tied for 5th in the 3L in strikeouts with 55, had a cutter that was virtually unhittable at times. The result was a Hurricanes 5-1 win. The winner was Smithley. He threw 6.2 innings of 3-hit ball. The loser was Daniel Cummins. Earning his 10th save for Cape Coral was Silas Jacobs.
The Hurricanes got an important contribution from catcher Ray Lawrence, who in the bottom of the fourth punched a 2-2 sinker to center for a run-scoring double. It was his 6th double of the season and put the Hurricanes ahead, 3-1.
"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Hurricanes manager Greg Diersing, "I like our chances."
The win puts the Hurricanes at 22-20, while the Oaks drop to 21-21.
