Ponies Sunk by Oaks
|
The Oakland Oaks beat the Kingston Ponies, 6-1, at The Oak Grove. Starting pitcher Craig Smith was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. Smith, the winner, moves to 8-3. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 1 walk. Fernando Fonseca recorded the save for Oakland, his 1st of the season.
The Ponies had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Oaks going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old right fielder Brian Orpen came to the plate. Orpen hit a 2-run double on a 1-1 slider from Kingston hurler George Taylor. It was Orpen's 15th double of the year.
Smith said his team "played with determination."
Oakland has an impressive 43-15 record.
