Sam Hart imposed his will on the Saboteurs from the get-go. Relying mainly on his cutter, the left-hander spearheaded the 5-1 Virginia Beach triumph. The winning pitcher was Hart, now 1-0. He tossed 6.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 8. The last-place Whales own a record of 16-31.
The Whales took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Moe Locke banged a two-out single. Virginia Beach had been trailing 1-0, but Locke hit a full count sinker from Steve Stewart for a 2-run single.
"I thought we played some darn good baseball," said Whales manager Wilson López.
