The Toronto Thunder defeated the Boston Patriots, 6-4, at Thunder Field. Toronto right fielder John Matthews had a superb performance. He went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Luis Rosário notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. His record now sits at 1-0. Toronto is now 39-37.
Matthews had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-1 cutter from Mark Sanders, he banged a 3-run home run to left, giving the Thunder a 5-4 lead. It was the 17th home run of the year for Matthews.
Toronto manager Jordan Smith commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
