Whales Get One-Run Win at Richland
Richland first baseman Corneliu Zamfir had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Zamfir went 3-5 with 2 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, even as Virginia Beach beat the Rails, 7-6. The winner was Matt Whitfield, who threw 103 pitches over 6.1 innings. The left-hander was charged with 4 runs on 12 hits. The save went to Jack Barr, his 9th this season.

Virginia Beach right fielder Jim Edwards landed a blow when he belted a 2-run home run in the top of the third. It was his 2nd home run of the season. With it, the Whales took a 3-0 lead.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Richland manager Ludovic Fontaine. "The effort was great."

The last-place Whales own a record of 28-52.
