Liberty Academy Need Extra Innings to Top Pilgrims, 7-3
|
The Philadelphia Liberty Academy faced a tough opponent in Providence pitcher Guillermo Contreras, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Field of Plenty by a final score of 7-3 in 10 innings. Contreras went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs. The winner was Roberto Cerda in relief. His record improves to 10-3. Alfredo López took the loss. Today's win puts Philadelphia at 53-48, while Providence falls to 48-53.
Philadelphia used a timely hit from Joe Hughes to get the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to put the Liberty Academy ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a difference-maker.
"It's the best feeling when you come through for your teammates," said Hughes.
