Richard Shepherd had a good game, but he could not keep the St. Petersburg Thunder from falling, 10-9, to the Mercer Island Screaming Eagles at Baby Thunder Dome. The St. Petersburg second baseman was 2-4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5 in the loss. The win went to Charles Jones in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Anastasio Méndez took the loss. The loss drops St. Petersburg to 1-4.

Mercer Island won the game in part because of Emílio Lozano. The center fielder ripped a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Screaming Eagles ahead, 8-7. For the game, Lozano had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.

"If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Mercer Island manager Ricardo Vargas.
