The Squirrel Hill Pierogis locked up a win at Field of the Rawhides, knocking off the Marquette Miners, 5-3. On the mound for Squirrel Hill was right-hander Robert Martin. He played a major role in the triumph. In 7 innings, Martin surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 1. He allowed 2 runs. Abraham Catron closed the door for Squirrel Hill, picking up his 2nd save of the year.
The Miners had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Pierogis going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 24-year old right fielder Tomás Orro came to the plate. Orro hit a 2-run double on a 0-1 slider from Marquette hurler Pepe Valentín. It was Orro's 2nd double of the year.
"What we get, we earn," Martin told the Squirrel Hill Citizen.
The Pierogis have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 6th win in 20 games.
