The Squirrel Hill Pierogis took Mercer Island pitcher Nick Johnston's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Field of the Rawhides. The final score had Squirrel Hill getting past the Screaming Eagles, 5-2. Johnston went 5.1 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 7. The winner was Squirrel Hill reliever Luis García, now 1-0. The loser was Aaron Houghton. Squirrel Hill is now 14-13.
The Pierogis got an important contribution from left fielder Jacob Cox, who in the bottom of the sixth punched a first pitch fastball into left for a 2-run home run. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Pierogis ahead, 4-2.
"We won," Cox told assembled media after the game. "I guess that's all that really matters."
