Both teams had their opportunities, but in the end, the Gwinnett Guinea Pigs got the win.
The Gwinnett Guinea Pigs took Marquette pitcher Marcus Thomas's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Marquette Stadium. The final score had Gwinnett getting past the Miners, 4-2. Thomas went 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 9. Rod Pritchard picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 4-1. Bryan Ogle was tagged with the loss.
Gwinnett needed the clutch hitting of Don Kirby to seal the deal. The left fielder swatted a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Guinea Pigs on top, 3-2. For the game, Kirby had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
After the game, Gwinnett manager Cary Collins applauded the team's effort. "They busted their humps out there," he said.
