Big Day by Collins Sparks 5-2 Memphis Win
|
A good performance from second baseman Butch Collins helped the Memphis Mockingbirds defeat the Toronto Thunder, 5-2. Collins was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for the Mockingbirds. Noud Taaij got the win, improving to 6-10. He worked 7.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. Kenny Flint, credited with the save, is now 4 for 5 in save opportunities.
There was more than one reason the Mockingbirds beat the Thunder, but Collins's big at-bat in the bottom of the first was an important factor. He staked his team to a 2-0 lead when he hit a 2-run single.
Said losing manager Jordan Smith: "It's very easy to sit in an ivory tower and critique the pitching, but the bottom line is we need to score runs."
The 8th-place Mockingbirds now have a record of 42-54.
