Mercer Island first baseman Nobuo Kobayashi had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Kobayashi was 2 for 2 with a home run, 2 walks, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2, even as Nuevo Mexico beat the Screaming Eagles, 7-6. The Mariachis saw their win-loss record go to 44-40. At the same time, the Screaming Eagles fell to 38-46.

The game reached a climactic end in the bottom of the ninth. With Nuevo Mexico trailing 6-5, Donnie MacKim delivered the decisive blow, stroking a fastball from Roger Haines for a 2-run double. Ballgame.

"If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Nuevo Mexico manager Allen Carlson.
