Loss to Highlanders Extends St. Petersburg Losing Streak
St. Petersburg got a big-time effort from pitcher Alfonso Escamilla, but it wasn't enough to keep the Asheville Highlanders from winning the game, 3-2. Escamilla threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. The losses continue to add up for St. Petersburg, which has now fallen 10 times in a row.

The Thunder had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Highlanders going into the top of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old shortstop Jesús Martínez came to the plate. Martínez hit a 2-run double on a first pitch slider from St. Petersburg hurler Alfonso Escamilla. It was Martínez's 14th double of the year.

"We're in a funk and we need to shake ourselves out of it," said St. Petersburg manager Emílio Sáenz.
