The Caldwell Chiefs took Matlacha pitcher Bob Smithley's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Fuller Park. The final score had Caldwell getting past the Manatees, 5-2. Smithley went 8 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 8. The win belonged to Bernie Williams in relief. His record improves to 2-3. Mike Hayes took the loss for Matlacha. The Chiefs improved to 45-29.
Caldwell took the lead, 3-2, on Ángel Macías's 12th home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off Matlacha pitcher Mike Hayes in the top of the ninth.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Macías said.
