Despite a fine performance by left fielder António Ortega, the Eugene Vandals lost to the Newmarket Rogues, 5-4. Ortega was 4-4 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 3 times. Reliever Rodney Johnson picked up the win. His record improves to 4-4. Kent Church, who was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2055 draft, took the loss. Bobby Spears finished the game for Newmarket and earned his 13th save.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Fred Stevens came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Eugene pitcher Kent Church, he hit a 1-2 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Newmarket on top, 5-4.
"I know we have our doubters," said Eugene manager Milton Mathews. "But I still have high hopes for this team."
Newmarket occupies 9th place in the Premier A at 22-32.
