Colorado Blanks Piranhas, Thurston at His Best
|
The Panama City Piranhas had no answer for Colorado Billy Goats pitcher Sloppy Thurston. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 7-0. Panama City managed only 1 hit off Thurston, who had 5 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Thurston got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Billy Goats fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
In 16 starts this season, Thurston has chalked up a 10-3 record and a 2.11 ERA.
