Rocketeers Top Rainbow Mermaids, 14-8, to Begin R3
Both pitching staffs were roughed up at Atlantica in Game 1 of the Tournament of Champions, but Seattle starter Bruce Hawkins mustered enough to carry the Rocketeers to victory over the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids, 14-8. Hawkins threw 6.1 innings allowing 2 runs in the slugfest. The Rocketeers now lead 1-0 in the best-of-7 series.

In the top of the fourth, Seattle designated hitter Jorge Beguer had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and two out, Beguer stroked a 2-run single to center. It made the score 5-1, Seattle. For the game, he was 2 for 6 with a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2.

"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Hawkins told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Atlantica in Hampton.
