Mezzatesta Slugs 2 Home Runs, Dirty Reds Beat Leviathan, 8-3
|
The Dayton Dirty Reds knocked off the Nova Scotia Leviathan, 8-3, at Lang Park. Fernando Mezzatesta was a big reason Dayton won. The third baseman slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 6 runs and scored twice. Jim Hunter got the win, improving to 1-0. He worked 7.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 2. Dayton is now 40-16, 4½ games up in the Third League.
With Dayton leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Mezzatesta came up to bat against Nova Scotia pitcher Howard Randolph. Mezzatesta hit a fastball to right for a grand slam home run. His 8th home run of the season put the Dirty Reds on top, 8-3.
"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Mezzatesta said after the game.
