Highlanders Beat Mariachis, 3-2
|
Fans watched the Asheville Highlanders and the Nuevo Mexico Mariachis fight to the finish.
In a low-scoring contest between the Asheville Highlanders and the Nuevo Mexico Mariachis, 26-year old left-handed pitcher Carlos Maldonado proved to be the difference. The Asheville left-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-2 Highlanders win. Werner Payne came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. His record now stands at 4-2. Picking up the save was 27-year old right-handed pitcher Rob Sawyer.
Asheville took a 3-2 lead on John Weber's 5th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Weber hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Nuevo Mexico pitcher Albert Wallace visibly frustrated.
"You need to show up when your number's called," said Weber.
The 8th-place Highlanders now have a record of 18-24.
