TWIT Takes on the 2039 Offseason

By | 2020-05-07

Hello and welcome to the first installment of This Week In Trades! Joining me in the studio tonight is Master of Hate and Haver of Strong Opinions Chros from the frozen north. I, Cheese, will be your host this evening as we embark on a journey through the murky depths of the 2039 offseason of trades.

Now normally we’d go through every trade but this is a family show and the kids have to go to bed soon, so we’ll try to condense it as much as possible. So without further ado, I present to you our first victim of the night!

NVSP Chris HollandCLE2039 STL 2nd Round
OF Rob Brooks

This happened before the awards were completed, but Holland wound up winning the Gold Ball in the PL and Brooks was worth about 2 WAR in the 3L last year as a RF. This looks very lopsided and Grogg should feel guilty for fleecing poor, innocent Davey.

I’m not sure what happened here. Davey won the 2038 offseason by
waiting out the market and signing many nice things late. This offseason, he kicked off the offseason with…. this? Rumor has it that CCTV footage shows Davey’s scout is seen accepting a large bag of cash from a figure resembling a block of Cheese.

CLERP Bill Glenn (A)
CF Sadiya Seth (A)
SS Harold Dansey (R)
MONSP Gerald Orlebar

Grogg pulls off what looks like another steal of a deal for a strong lefty with some small attitude issues. Seth looks like a solid +WAR guy but the other two seem fringey to me.

Panda got back slightly less value than he originally gave up for Orlebar. It will be interesting to see if Orlebar can lead a staff. Although he pitched like an ace for me, he was in the back of my rotation. Hopefully Cleveland wins to keep him happy. You won’t like Orly Bear when he’s angry.

SP Martin Luther (R)
SS Tony Calhoun
$6,000,000
MISS2B Rylen Roersma

Ugh, Davey got a great young 2B but also gave up a potential ace in the making and more. I like this deal for both sides, but I dislike it for me.

Davey redeemed himself here after the Holland trade. I like this deal on his side more, and Roersma will tear up the PL for a decade.

1B Derek Bangert
RF Gilberto Ocasio
SP David Schrattenhaler (R)
SP Greg Hoover (AAA)
THBRF Jorge Herrera (50%)

One day we will all look back at this sequence of events and have many ‘what if’ scenarios. What if Thunder Bay had not retained 50% on these guys? What if Buffalo had held their picks for the last 3 seasons instead of reloading constantly? What if Vidro didn’t opt out? What if Herrera didn’t fall off his moped and break his tailbone, missing 9 months and causing Chros to fly to Germany to hunt Markus for revenge?

I gave up many things here. All the picks. Ocasio, who although had a down year, is a gold glover and had two strong offensive years prior. A cheap, young 4th/5th starter in Hoover and Schrattenhaler who is a former 9th overall pick and has a good chance to get talent bumps. My offense sucked last year and although Bangert was great, Herrera is a MVP candidate and hopefully a White Walker long term.

LICF Martin Talia (75%)NO1B Julian Lemur (R)
CF Juan Santangel (R)
LF Vincente Romero (AAA)

Talia had a monster ’38 season and the Voodoo gave up some nice specs to get him at a reduced rate. I don’t expect Talia to ever hit 30 HR again without playing 108 games in Montana or Long Island, however.

Talia looks like a guy who has really outperformed his ratings and I wonder if that will hold up. Chase badly wanted a CF and he got a solid one here. Lemur is still a young INT prospect so scout ratings will vary on him drastically. If he’s anything close to what OSA projects, LI got a nice deal. Romero, who although hasn’t performed anywhere close to where Talia has, looks like he can be a similar player at least ratings wise.

MON1B Charles Geudre (AAA)
LF Yaakov Shmerkin (AAA)
SEASP John A. Mais (50%)
MONSP John A. MaisNO2040 NO 2nd Round
2040 NO 3rd Round

Mais got passed around like the unwanted giant prick he is in the clubhouse. About the only good thing about this is Chase can cut him now that he blew out his arm for the season and maybe save his clubhouse.

Losing Mais is a tough blow for Chase after his FA spending spree. It appears no one wanted any part of Mais, not even Markus. Not sure why he was only traded for a 5th.

GRE1B Danny Trautmann

Another great expiring Bosma guy gets let go for less than everyone expects. Of course there’s another monster waiting in the wings in Greenville but I still think he could get more from his trades.

The only explanation for this is that Greenville thought Nawlins sucked and this was before Chase went nuts in FA

LISP Jorge Otero (100%)MISS2040 MISS 1st Round
SP Martin Luther (A)
SP Greg Hodge (A)
RF Omar Luoa (R)

If someone told me Vidro, Fallows, and Otero would leave the SL after 2038 last year I’d have thought they were crazy. This is just another huge trade. Some big talent going to Long Island for an insane 100% retention on one of the top pitchers in the USBA. Otero should carry Mississippi to the playoffs in the 3L by himself.

Mississippi just acquired Allerdale (ed note: this trade just posted at the time of this comment) so that 1st rounder probably went from a top 5 pick to a top 10. Still a solid return though and a good trade for both sides. I’m excited to see what Miss does this year while taking the CHROS approach.

LI2040 LI 1st Round
2040 LI 2nd Round
CHSSP Aldo Raine

A lot of people hate this trade but I think Aldo has a bright future. If he stays healthy, this is a good trade.

I hated this, but I hope it works out for Lawn Guyland or else they’ll be on the express train to the 3L.

MISS2040 NV 1st Round
LF Cornelio Japon
GREC Doug Allerdale (75%)

This deal seems like an emergency dump of a great catcher but the 75% retention screams “I just gave away Allerdale and bought a pick and some random dude”. I said I’d never doubt Bosma ever again after he made me look foolish last year during the KNORTS meetings, but he’s making it terribly difficult.

Um…. wut? I’d like to think this is sort of some master plan and he will prove me right for picking him 3rd in KNORTS, but the pick will be bad, Japon is bad, and he’s almost giving Allerdale away for free.

And there you have it folks, This Week In Trades has wrapped up the 2039 offseason! For a full list of trades please see below.
